best way to explore the park's dense scrub jungle and villus (natural lakes).

north on the A12 highway, then turn off onto the B420 road which leads straight
into the park entrance. The drive itself is stunning, with rice paddies, palm
groves, and small villages along the way.

especially in the early morning and evening. If you're really lucky, you may

Wilpattu National Park is a wildlife
lover’s paradise! As Sri Lanka’s largest national park, it’s home to some of
the most incredible animals. I was so excited to spot some of these amazing
creatures in their natural habitat.
The park is famous for leopards, and
we were lucky enough to see not one but two of these elusive big cats prowling
through the bush. My heart nearly leapt out of my chest when I saw those
spotted coats and long tails! Wilpattu has one of the highest leopard densities
in the world, so keep your eyes peeled.
We also saw herds of spotted deer,
sambar deer, and axis deer roaming the open grasslands. The park is a refuge
for these gentle grazers. My favorite was the spotted deer with their soft
brown coats and white speckles. Too cute!
The bird life was also fantastic.
Colorful peacocks strutted around, displaying their vibrant tail feathers. We
spotted rare painted storks wading through the park’s many lakes and marshes.
The melodic songs of orange-breasted green pigeons and Sri Lanka gray hornbills
filled the air.
A real treat was seeing a small herd
of Asian elephants enjoying a mud bath and foraging for food. Their playful

Leopard Rock
The Leopard Rock area has to be at
the top of your list for leopard spotting in Wilpattu National Park. I was so
excited when my guide told me this massive granite boulder is one of the best
places to see these elusive big cats in action. As we made our way there at
dawn, I could barely contain my enthusiasm—I might finally get to see a leopard
in the wild!
Upon arriving, we climbed to the top
of Leopard Rock to get a birds-eye view of the surrounding bush. Almost
instantly, my guide spotted movement in the distance. A leopard! It was a
female slowly making her way between the rocks and scrub, probably returning
from a night of hunting to her cub. I watched in awe through my binoculars as
she gracefully navigated the terrain. Seeing this normally nocturnal animal in
broad daylight made me feel extremely fortunate.
After some time, she disappeared
from view, so we made our way back down the rock. On the way to our 4WD, we
stumbled upon paw prints in the dirt, a reminder of the other beasts that call
this place home. My heart was full of joy knowing I had accomplished my goal
and this was only the beginning of my safari adventure in Wilpattu National
Park.
